So, I designed a show at the Geffen Theater back in March. Well, let me rephrase that. I shopped and sewed for all of February and the show opened in March. I basically had a nickel and a paperclip to rub together, but I pulled the 1950/60's show together and it looked pretty good. Not great-- but pretty good.
The show, Louis and Keely, was supposed to run for 8 weeks. Maybe, just maybe, it might run for longer. I mean it is a good show. I love the music, but did I think it would still be running. 23 weeks later . . .
No, it never crossed my mind.
So, if you get a chance, check it out, but as a designer who did this on a nickel I would love to put a disclaimer on the clothing. The beginnings of a design is there, but the costumes are a bit tired. If given the chance and the money, I would love to give it another life. It really is the difference between Theater and Film. In film, I have a concrete image (good or bad) of what an audience will see. In Theater, I am at the mercy of tired clothing, dry cleaning mistakes, petticoats flopping, costume changes gone awry and actors who decide not to wear a piece of their costumes.
Bigger houses do have more control, but I am very aware-- I'm just not there yet.
Is the show still running? Any plans for other cities?
