One of hardest things to figure out when I started working in the film biz was the lingo. Luckily, I made friends with the AD's (Assistant Directors) who helped me out. Now, the venaculer springs from my mouth and I don't even realize I'm talking in code.
There is a new book out called, Film Speak, which helps define these terms and gives a little bit of the history behind the terminalogy. Below is the link to a KCRW podcast that interviews the author. I even learned a few things.
