The Art of the Bomb

This week was explosion week on The Irishman. As in any 1970's Italian vs the Irish, there will be bombs and blood. Both, can be problematic for me. They require multiples of vintage clothing so we can do the take several times which is difficult and expensive. it is hard to replicate period clothing because of the difference in the fabrics from then and now, but also the patterns and style can be so specific. My pet peeve when watching a movie is seeing a costume on an actor that screams-- I needed to be multiples and we could not afford it so I only wear this outfit once and it is not that cool. Ok, enough rant.
However, digital has somewhat made my life easier because instead of blowing up dummies that look like the actors in their clothing they do it in post.
We shot this last night until 5 am. The actor Jason Butler Harner plays Art Snepenger in the film and in a double cross get blown up. We did the entire lead up to the explosion, had him lay under the car-- long legs extended, shot a "plate" of the shot, then pulled the actor out. Next, they blew up the car, but in the editing room they will cut and paste his "body" into the explosion. Cool huh.
Jason and I did some candid shots while we were waiting for the explosives crew.

SORRY FOLKS, NOT ALLOWED TO SHOW PICTURES OF THE SHOOT
